Espin P.M.J., Mather R.M. & Adams J. (1983) Age and foraging in Black-winged Stilts Himantopus himantopus. ARDEA 71 (2): 225-228
1. The foraging behaviour of adult and juvenile Black-winged Stilts was studied at Lake Alyki, Greece. 2. Birds feed mainly at dawn and dusk in family parties. Adult stilts aggressively excluded other birds from the area in which they were feeding with their juveniles. 3. Adult feeding success rate was significantly higher than that of juveniles, but search speed and handling time were not significantly different. 4. Juvenile birds made significantly more intention movements than adults. 5. The feeding technique used by most stilts at Alyki, taking molluscs from mud surface, is not that reported as the typical feeding behaviour of this species.
