A study was made of the egg-laying capacity of the Black-tailed Godwit. The first clutches of 30 marked individuals were taken soon after completion, resulting in 12 repeat-clutches within the boundaries of the experimental area (250 acres). Probably some repeat-clutches were laid outside the area. After removal of the 12 repeat-clutches 3 third clutches were found. When the clutch was in the last stage of incubation when taken, a great proportion of the birds left the area probably without a second attempt. The last clutches were started at the end of May. The interval between egg-taking and laying of the first egg of the repeat-clutch was 5-16 days (average 7.2 days). Recorded distances between successive nests were 80-640 metres. From early June a number of Godwits assembled in groups, in which molting birds were present. Presumably many unsuccessful breeders were among them. The recovery powers of single-brooded species are discussed. Many species belonging to very different families produce repeat-clutches when the eggs are taken. Normally there is a short interval between the clutches, in some species even after a considerable period of incubation (Lapwing, Herring gull).
