van Franeker J.A. (1979) Some notes on the Fulmar in the Netherlands. ARDEA 67 (1-2): 49-53
Sex, coloration, and measurements of 120 Fulmars, collected in the Netherlands, were examined. Numbers of Fulmars along the Dutch coast increased after the dramatic growth of nearby British colonies, but a certain number of stragglers, including individuals of the subspecies glacialis, were present along the coast even before this Increase. Fulmars occur near the Dutch shore all year round but come within an observable range only when prospecting for new breeding places or forced by stormy weather. In the period February-April many more females than males are found. It is suggested that this is related to a stronger attachment of males to the colony, thus preventing them from travelling as far as females.
