Veltman C.J. (1989) Effects of experimental food addition on post-natal dispersal polygyny and reproductive success in pair-defended territories of the Australian Magpie Gymnorhina tibicen. ARDEA 77 (2): 211-216
Food was added daily to five Australian magpie Gymnorhina tibicen territories in the Manawatu, New Zealand, over a 240 day period commencing 13 February, 1982. Data on juvenile disperal, polygyny and reproductive success were collected from these and six comparable control territories. Juveniles dispersed from both experimental and control territories, and there was no difference in he timing of emigration. Variations in the food supply did not appear to be a proximate cause of post-natal dispersal by Australian Magpies, who seemed instead to respond to opportunities for reproduction. There was no difference in the median reproductive success of the females in experimental and control territories.
