SCHOLS R (1987) Autumn migration of male and female Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs in South Limburg, Netherlands. LIMOSA 60 (3): 119-122.

In the autumn of 1984 visible bird migration at Vrouwenbos, South Limburg, SE. Netherlands, was almost daily observed. Special attention was paid to the timing of migration of the two sexes of the Chaffinch. The birds migrating through the area originate from Finland and eastern Scandinavia and winter mainly in France (fig. I). In? 1984 the autumn migration started rather early in the season, but the numbers were fairly normal (fig. 2). Between 17 September and 4 November, 26 838 Chaffinches were counted in 358 hours. To obtain reliable sex ratios, only randomly selected migrating flocks or individuals were chosen (1615 birds, 6%). The percentage 00 gradually increased during the season (fig. 3). On average, 00 Chaffinches migrated five days later than S!S! (fig. 4). Both sexes were equally numerous. No difference could be found in the main migration direction of the two sexes (224?). The results agree very well with other studies. It is suggested that differences in the timing of migration between the sexes in the Chaffinch and some other Fringillidae are endogenously controlled.
