GANZENWERKGROEP NEDERLAND/BELGIË, (1987) Geese counts in the Netherlands and Flanders Belgium in 1984 / 1985. LIMOSA 60 (1): 31-39.

In this paper, the results of the geese counts in the Netherlands and Flanders in 1984/85 are presented (fig. 1-6, tab. 1-11). The number of 183 000 Bean Geese Anser [abatis in February was a record for the Netherlands. Among these birds at least 23 000 were of the subspecies [abaiis, which is another record. The number of Pink-footed Geese (peak nummer 17 000 on 25 November) is rather stable during the last five years. White-fronted Geese remain rather stable since 1982/83 (peak Netherlands and Flanders in 1984-85 317 000). Greylag Geese peaked at 60 000 in late October. Only 58 000 Barnacle Geese were counted during the peak period (1983/84 71 000), mainly as a result of a low reproduction success in 1984 (6.4% juveniles). During the severe winter 1984185, only 2500 Brent Geese remained in the Dutch Wadden Sea and at least 7300 in SW. Netherlands. In spring, 56 000 birds were counted in the Wadden Sea area, 11% less than in spring 1984. Juvenile percentages varied strongly between (sub)species (tab. 1). ##### Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus = Anser fabalis brachyrhynchus Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis Tundra Bean Goose Anser serrirostris Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis
