Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo In recent years Cormorants of the continental race sinensis have been colour ringed in eight countries in Europe (fig. I). Birds from the colony Oostvaardersplassen have an average sighting rate of 3.2 per bird so far (tab I). From the birds reported dead 88.4, 7.9,1.6,1.6, and 0.5% died in their first to fifth calendar year respectively. Site fidelity in both the breeding colony and at the wintering areas proves to be not uncommon. The ring reading effort so far has been highest in countries in central and western Europe (fig. 2).
