BERGH LMJ VAN DER (1989) Waterfowl census in January 1987. LIMOSA 62 (2): 75-80.

In this paper the results of the waterfowl census in the Netherlands (fig. I) in January 1987 (very severe frost, but hardly any snowfall) are given. The total number of waterfowl amounted to I 086 285 birds covering 27 species and 521 areas (fig. 2). Most numerous species were Mallard, Coot, Wigeon, and Eider, each of them with more than 100 000 birds (tab. I). Of other species counted the very large number (3429) of Whooper Swans, mainly concentrated in the area of the large rivers and in the 80 IJsselmeer area, must be mentioned.
