BEIJERSBERGEN R (1989) Current research: Little Tern at the Hooge Platen. LIMOSA 62 (2): 99-100.

Little Tern Sternula albifrons = Sterna albifrons the western part of the Westerschelde, not far outside the coast of Zeeland Flanders, are the High Slabs. This area consists of sand and mudflats and covers with a high surface area of c. 60 acres at low tide and of c. I 800 acres. The Hooge plates are surrounded by trenches up to 40 m deep. in this gullies running strong tidal currents, with mean high water is the tidal range 3.9 m, during spring 5 meters. The High Plates are since 1978 by the Foundation for the Zeeland landscape managed as natuurreservaal. The area has great ornithological importance, especially when foraging and flood refuge 30 000-50 000 shorebirds (May, August-September), ruiplaats for Mountain Ducks (July-August), sleeping to 10,000 geese (January-February
