GERRITSEN GJ (2022) A small part of the Icelandic Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus islandicus population migrates through the Netherlands during spring. LIMOSA 95 (1): 46-48.

The Netherlands is an important stopover for Whimbrels during spring migration. Ring recoveries so far have shown that this concerns Whimbrels from the Scandinavian and Russian breeding populations Numenius phaeopus phaeopus. Icelandic Whimbrels mainly migrate though the United Kingdom and Ireland, and are also seen in Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium, based on ring recoveries and tracking studies. On 29 April 2019 and 5 May 2021 colourringed Icelandic Whimbrels were seen in the Dutch province of Overijssel. This is the first evidence that Icelandic Whimbrels pass through the Netherlands during spring migration. Knowing that in spring 2019 and 2021, according to the University of Iceland, approximately 301 and 205 Icelandic Whimbrels with colour-rings were still alive, we estimate that at least 1661-2439 Icelandic Whimbrels migrate through the Netherlands in spring.
