OSIECK ER & WINKELMAN JE (1983) Bird-ringing in the Netherlands during 1961 - 1980. LIMOSA 56 (2): 45-58.

General trends of bird-ringing in the Netherlands in 1961-80 are discussed. During the sixties the yearly number of birds ringed have doubled (fig. 1). A peak was reached at the beginning of the seventies, when more than 200 000 birds were ringed yearly. The number of recoveries remained stable in the sixties, but increased in the seventies (tab. 1). During 1976-80 67% more recoveries were handled than 10 years before. This rise has been caused by the increased ringing of birds of prey (fig. 2A), waders and gulls (fig. 3A), which all produce many recoveries. Some suggestions for the future of bird-ringing in the Netherlands are given. Ringing totals for selective species in the years 1975-80 are provided in an appendix Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus = Larus ridibundus European Herring Gull Larus argentatus Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris Grey Heron Ardea cinerea Common Blackbird Turdus merula Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus Common Teal Anas crecca Great Tit Parus major Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus
