GERRITSEN GJ (1995) Short contributions: A population of Mandarin Ducks Aix galericulata at the Noord-Veluwe. LIMOSA 68 (4): 163-164.

The establishment of a population of Mandarin Ducks in the northern part of the Veluwe, an extensive woodland area in the centre of The Netherlands, is described. One pair, probably escapes, settled here in 1967. People helped the ducks by placing dozens of nestboxes in trees and by providing food during winter. Up to 70 birds visit these feeding places. As a result, the population increased, but until recently it was not clear to what extent. Two concentrations of Mandarin Ducks, with a total of 213 birds, were found on brooks during a cold spell in November 1993. The birds had moved to the brooks when ponds in wooded gardens (where they normally stay) were frozen over. This local population is by far the largest in The Netherlands.
