JUKEMA J (1992) Short contributions: Seasonal change ofbill-length in Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis. LIMOSA 65 (1): 30-31.

Bill length of Snow Buntings is significantly shorter in birds wintering in The Netherlands, as compared to birds during the breeding season (tab. 1). The phenomenon is thought to be related to the marked difference in the nature of food during summer and winter. Shorter bills were recorded in both subspecies wintering in The Netherlands (P. n. nivalis and P. n. insulae) and in both sexes, except for insulae (probably as a result of small sample size).
