Van Den Berg A.B., Smeenk C., Bosman C.W., Haase B.J., Van Der Niet A.M. & Cadee G.C. (1991) Barau's Petrel Pterodroma baraui, Jouanin's Petrel Bulweria fallax and other seabirds in the northern indian ocean in June-July 1984 and 1985. ARDEA 79 (1): 1-14
Areas with high seabird densities were found at the approaches of the Red Sea and off southern India, south-eastern Sri Lanka and southwestern Sumatra. In contrast, the Cocos Basin off western Sumatra, the eastern part of the Arabian Sea and the Centre of the Red Sea were almost devoid of seabirds. Areas with high numbers of seabirds were those where high concentrations of phytoplankton were measured. Our records show that, at least in June-July. Barau's Petrel regularly disperses over a broad zone north of the equator, and that Jouanin's Petrel occurs more commonly than hitherto known east of 58.degree.E in the Arabian Sea as far as the Maldive Ridge. regularly east to southern India and Sri Lanka, and incidentally further east. A record of either Schlegel's or Tahiti Petrel is discussed. Records of Bulwer's Petrel, Cory's, Streaked, Pale-footed and Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Wilson's. Swinhoe's and Matsudaira's Petrel and Pomarine and South Polar Skua shed more light on the pattern of occurrence of these species in the northern Indian Ocean during the southern winter.
