OUWENEEL GL & STRUCKER RCW (1998) A concentration of Quails Coturnix coturnix at Hoeksche Waard in 1997. LIMOSA 71 (2): 80-81.

During a census of breeding birds in the Oudeland van Strijen, southwest Netherlands, spring 1997, a remarkable concentration of Quails was found. After the first bird was heard calling on the second of May, numbers increased rapidly. In June, 62 territories were recorded (3.9 territoriesllOO ha). Most of them were located in hayfields. The highest density recorded was 0.9 territories per ha (eleven territories in a strip of 500 x 250 m). The agricultural use of the larger part of the area is being transformed from intensive towards extensive. It is assumed that these changes temporarily provided the Quails with an attractive habitat. In previous years, the species was recorded only a few times in the area.
