BIJLSMA RG (1999) Necrophagy in Great Tits Parus major. LIMOSA 72 (2): 65-66.

During a cold spell with 10-15 cm of snow cover from 11 February 1999 onward, Great Tits experienced difficulties extracting beech nuts from under the snow in western Drenthe. On 12-14 February a male and a female Great Tit stripped a dead conspecific (window casualty) of its flesh, including brains and eyes. Following short foraging bouts on 12 and 13 February (at most 15 min per day), the dead bird was picked clean between 09h05 and l3hOO on 14 February (11-41 morsels/minute swallowed, mean 23.1) after which the remains were discarded, and eaten by a fox.
