BERGH LMJ VAN (1992) Waterfowl census in January 1990. LIMOSA 65 (1): 23-27.

This paper presents the results of the waterfowl census conducted in The Netherlands during 6-22 January 1990 (fig. 1,2, tab. I). The total number of waterfowl counted in 622 areas during the period amounted to 1.4 million (27 species). The most numerous species were Wigeon, Mallard and Coot with over 200 000 birds each. Other species with numbers of over 100 000 birds were Tufted Duck and Scaup. A synopsis of the abundance of waterfowl species counted in The Netherlands during three cold winters (1985-87) and during three very mild seasons (l988-90)is given in table 2. In 1990,49 areas held one or more species with at least 1%of the NW-European flyway population. Internationally important numbers of Bewick's Swans were counted in 22 areas.
